Blue Square, one of the largest interactive betting services in the UK, uses PacketExchange to protect their revenues.
The Challenge
Blue
Square operates one of the largest interactive betting services in the
UK. They were being targeted by international criminal syndicates using
distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to block their internet
connection and prevent customers accessing their website, effectively
cutting off the company‘s revenues. To thwart the criminals‘ extortion
attempts, restore the revenue generating capabilities of their website,
and generate profits from their business activities, Blue Square needed
an Internet connection which was within their budgetary constraints and
yet could not be blocked by a DDoS attack.
The Solution
Although PacketExchange services are all delivered over Ethernet ports
with capacities of either 100 Mb or 1Gb, they do not force customers to
buy services at these capacity levels. Instead they allow each of their
customers to contract for the level of capacity that their business
normally requires - in some cases this is less than 10Mb. Furthermore,
they do not limit their customers to the level of capacity that they
have contracted for. Should their business requirements increase, they
can utilise as much capacity as their port can handle (up to 100Mb or
1Gb depending on the port) with no notice or re-provisioning required –
all they have to do is pay for the additional capacity they use, at the
same per Mb rate as they pay for their contracted capacity.
The flexibility offered by PacketExchange services provided the ideal solution for BlueSquare.
The Result
For BlueSquare this meant that they could contract for, and pay for,
only the capacity that their business normally required. They had
access to additional capacity “on-demand” and were therefore able to
handle any attempted DDoS attacks. Their internet connection could no
longer be blocked and their revenues were secured.
